Mets Linked To Astros Superstar As Option Next Offseason According To Insider

Could the Mets end up signing one of the top third basemen in baseball?

The New York Mets could add some more star power next offseason.

The biggest question that will swirl around the club this season is the future of superstar first baseman Pete Alonso. While this is the case, he certainly could be back with the club on a new deal in free agency.

New York will have plenty of money to spend and could add some more talent as well. One player who has been mentioned as a possibility is Houston Astros superstar Alex Bregman by the New York Post's Joel Sherman.

"But as opposed to the (Dave Winfield)-to-(Yoshinobu Yamamoto) timeline, I suspect the Mets and Yankees will be renewing financial fisticuffs more frequently now that Steve Cohen is involved. There already has been speculation that the New York squads will be in a dollar duel next offseason for Juan Soto...

"And one that I think could be particularly interesting involves Alex Bregman...Players can get better, but neither projects to be a strong defender. Stearns is emphasizing that side of the ball. I do wonder if it is possible to have an overall good defense if you lack a strong hot-corner glove. How well would (Brett Baty) or (Ronny Mauricio) have to hit to justify having a below-average defender at the position?"

Bregman likely will hit free agency and could make a lot of sense for the Mets. New York was linked to fellow star third baseman Matt Chapman this offseason but opted to go in a different direction.

The Mets are planning on giving some young players some time this year but if they aren't able to take a step forward, why not sign one of the best infielders in baseball?
