Mets Linked To Star Third Baseman In Possible Blockbuster Trade

Could the Mets swing a blockbuster trade for a superstar third baseman?

The New York Mets need to make a major splash this offseason.

After an extremely underwhelming 2023 season, New York has some work to do. The Mets have brought in former Milwaukee Brewers executive David Stearns to lead the club into the future and he will have the tall task of making the Mets World Series contenders again.

New York has the most money of any club in the league, but likely won't throw it around as easily as it did last year. The Mets have multiple holes on the roster they need to fill and it will be interesting to see how they do so. New York could use help at third base and in the starting rotation specifically. The position-player market is very thin this offseason so New York may not get what it is looking for there. One player who has surprisingly been mentioned as a trade candidate who would make sense for the Mets is Houston Astros star third baseman Alex Bregman, according to SNY's Danny Abriano.

"If Bregman is indeed traded this offseason, both the Mets (whose third base situation is in flux) and (New York Yankees) (in need of more offense anywhere they can get it) could be fits," Abriano said. "Bregman's offensive production has dipped a bit since 2019, when he had an OPS of 1.015 and finished second in American League (Most Valuable Player) voting, but he's still a very good player. Over the last four seasons, he has slashed .261/.361/.442. And he has played 155 and 161 games in the last two seasons, respectively, after being limited to just 91 in 2021. In 2023, Bregman hit .262/.363/.441 with 25 homers, 28 doubles, 103 runs scored, and 98 RBI."

Bregman has been one of the best third basemen in baseball over the last eight years and would be an exceptional pickup for the Mets. It's surprising Bregman's name has been mentioned in trade rumors but if the Mets could land someone like him, it would be the perfect start to fixing the club. A move may not be likely, but should be monitored.
