Mets Reportedly Considered Favorites For Superstar Shohei Ohtani

Could the Mets actually land the biggest free agent in baseball history?

The New York Mets reportedly could make the biggest splash in baseball this upcoming offseason.

New York has plenty of work to do if it wants to make its way back to the postseason in 2024 and one player who reportedly could land with the club is Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani. This isn't the first time Ohtani has been mentioned as a possible fit for the Mets and likely won't be the last. The Mets have more money than anyone else and isn't too far away from making its way back to the postseason. Ohtani certainly would put the club over the top and The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal thinks his decision will be between the Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers.

"The Dodgers have been the favorite for a long time, or at least a team we thought would definitely be in the mix," Rosenthal said. "I cannot rule out the Mets. I cannot see Steve Cohen simply passing on Shohei Ohtani.

"And I would also include the (San Francisco Giants), the (Texas Rangers) -- yes, the Rangers -- and the (Seattle Mariners) as at least possibilities. I still think it comes down to LA versus New York -- Dodgers versus the Mets."

It's unclear exactly what the Mets will do this offseason. Some have speculated that the Mets are eyeing the 2025 or 2026 seasons as the club's next chance to contend but if there's any chance Ohtani signs with the Mets this offseason, they have to take it.
