It doesn't seem like the New York Mets are going to land their All-Star slugging target this offseason.

There's still time left in the offseason for the New York Mets to make more additions to their roster, even as Spring Training has arrived.

Ideally, the front office and coaching staff would know who is going to be competing for an Opening Day roster spot as the team gathers at their facility and begins preparing for the upcoming year.

David Stearns did hint that some more moves could be coming this offseason, but it doesn't seem like J.D. Martinez will be one of them.

According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, "The Mets feel like a long shot and will probably go with Mark Vientos at DH or use the spot to provide semi-rests for stars."

The insider also revealed that the Los Angeles Angels could be targeting the six-time All-Star as they try to fill out their roster.

Martinez, even at 35 years old, proved he could still play at a high level in the MLB, posting a slash line of .271/.321/.572 with 33 home runs and 103 RBI.

He entered free agency coming off three straight All-Star selections and continues to show he's one of the best hitters in the game.

The Mets are looking for veteran players to fit alongside their young prospects as they look to evaluate who should be part of the roster moving forward when the front office goes all in to build a contender.

Martinez would no doubt be an asset for New York this season, but winning games isn't their top priority.

Mark Vientos is a name that's been heavily discussed this offseason as he will compete for the starting third base role and will likely be used often at designated hitter like Heyman suggested.

He's also a power hitter, so the front office likely would rather see what they have in the former top prospect than spending money on someone like Martinez who would take away reps throughout the year.
