New York Mets DFA Reliever Who Threw Behind Rhys Hoskins

The New York Mets need bullpen help so they’re designated for assignment Yohan Ramírez and calling up an arm from the minors.

The New York Mets need a reliever more than they need a fan favorite at the moment, as MLB.com reported that the team designated for assignment reliever Yohan Ramírez on Monday.

Ramírez gained the admiration of Mets fans during the season-opening series with the Milwaukee Brewers after he threw behind Brewers designated hitter and former Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins during an at-bat.

The throw led to his ejection from the game and to a three-game suspension, which he appealed. His manager, Carlos Mendoza, was suspended for a game due to the incident.

The Mets are calling Cole Susler up to take his place.

Ramírez appeared in three games, going 0-1 with an 11.81 ERA. He threw 5.1 innings, gave up nine hits, seven earned runs and four walks while striking out six.

He’s pitched in the Majors every season since 2020, when he broke in with the Seattle Mariners. Since the start of the 2022 season, he’s pitched for the Mariners, the Cleveland Guardians, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago White Sox.

The White Sox traded Ramírez to the Mets in December for cash.

Being designated for assignment does not mean he can’t return to the Mets. But he must clear waivers and go unclaimed first.

Sulser was a non-roster invitee to spring training after he signed a minor-league deal in November. The Mets assigned him to Syracuse to start the season.

Sulser has pitched in the Majors in each of his last five seasons, staring in 2019 with the Tampa Bay Rays. He pitched the 2020 and 2021 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, the 2022 season with the Miami Marlins and last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
