New York Mets Star Ranks Among Best At Position

MLB.com is ranking each position and the site believes the Mets have the second-best player at this key infield position.

New York Mets shortstop was oh so close to being named the best shortstop in baseball by MLB.com.

The site is publishing its “Top 10 Right Now” at each position and shortstop came up in the queue and Lindor, who is coming off another fantastic season with the Mets, came in second.

The only player ahead of is understandable — Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager. He’s coming off leading the Rangers to their first World Series title and being named the World Series MVP for the second time. Nearly winning the AL batting title doesn’t hurt, either.

But MLB.com didn’t just rely on an eye test. To determine the rankings, the site used past player performances, offensive and defensive metrics, traditional baseball statistics and advanced metrics.

Like Seager, Lindor moved up from last year’s rankings. Seager was fourth last season and Lindor was fifth. So both took a four-spot jump.

While the Mets were not successful as a team, Lindor posted another great individual season in his ninth year in the Majors. He slashed .254/.336/.470/.806 with 31 home runs and 98 RBI. It marked his fourth season with at least 30 home runs and his third season with at least 90 RBI.

Lindor didn’t make the All-Star Game, but he did win the Silver Slugger at shortstop and finished ninth in MVP voting.

For his career he is a four-time All-Star, a three-time Silver Slugger, a two-time Gold Glover and has finished in the Top 10 of MVP voting five different times, including the last two seasons with the Mets.

After Seager and Lindor, the rest of the Top 10 included the San Diego Padres’ Xander Bogaerts, the Chicago Cubs’ Dansby Swanson, the Philadelphia Phillies’ Trea Turner, the Toronto Blue Jays’ Bo Bichette, the Minnesota Twins’ Carlos Correa, the Milwaukee Brewers’ Willy Adames, the Kansas City Royals’ Bobby Witt Jr. and the Seattle Mariners, J.P. Crawford.
