New York Mets Trade Young Reliever to Baltimore Orioles

The New York Mets designated Yohan Ramirez for assignment just a few days ago and have found a taker for him in the trade market.

The New York Mets traded reliever Yohan Ramírez to the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday, three days after they designated him for assignment. Both teams announced the trade.

The Mets will get cash from the Orioles in the deal.

Ramirez is now best known to Mets fans as the pitcher that threw behind Milwaukee Brewers slugger on opening weekend after Hoskins got into an argument with Mets second baseman Jeff McNeil and then hit a home run off the Mets the following game.

On both occasions Hoskins used a cry-baby motion.

In an at-bat after the home run, Ramirez threw behind Hoskins, leading to his ejection and a three-game suspension. As he walked off the mound at Citi Field, Mets fans gave him a standing ovation, earning him temporary folk hero status.

His former manager, Carlos Mendoza, also got a one-game suspension.

With the Mets dealing with pitching injuries, Ramirez may have been caught in the need for fresher arms when they went to Atlanta for a four-game series. He appeared in three games, going 0-1 with an 11.81 ERA. He threw 5.1 innings, gave up nine hits, seven earned runs and four walks while striking out six.

Cole Susler took his place on the staff.

He will be on the Orioles’ 40-man roster, but it’s not clear whether he will be activated and placed on the 26-man roster or be assigned to a minor-league affiliate.

He’s pitched in the Majors every season since 2020, when he broke in with the Seattle Mariners. Since the start of the 2022 season, he’s pitched for the Mariners, the Cleveland Guardians, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago White Sox.

The White Sox traded Ramírez to the Mets in December for cash.
