Orioles' Henderson, Hyde Named AL Award Finalists

Gunnar Henderson and Brandon Hyde will find out if they are the AL's top rookie and manager next week.

Baltimore Orioles third baseman Gunnar Henderson and manager Brandon Hyde are finalists for two of the American League’s most prestigious awards, which were announced on Monday.

Henderson is up for Rookie of the Year while Hyde is up for Manager of the Year.

Henderson is competing with Cleveland’s Tanner Bibee and Boston’s Triston Casas. Hyde is competing with Texas’ Bruce Bochy and Tampa Bay’s Kevin Cash.

Voting was conducted based on regular-season performance.

Henderson played in 150 games and slashed .255/.325/.489/.814 with 29 doubles, nine triples, 28 home runs and 82 RBI. He struck out 159 times and walked 56 times. He also stole 10 bases. Baltimore selected Henderson in the second round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Morgan High School in Selma, Ala.

Hyde, in his fifth season as Orioles manager, led them to a winning record for the second straight season. He guided Baltimore to an AL-best 101 wins, won the AL East title and made their first postseason appearance since the AL Wild Card game in 2016.

The Orioles fell to the Texas Rangers, 3-0, in the AL Division Series.

Voting was conducted by members of the Baseball Writers Association of America and was based on regular-season performance.

Winners will be announced on Nov. 13 (Rookie), Nov. 14 (Manager), Nov. 15 (Cy Young) and Nov. 16 (MVP)
