Young Orioles Star Could Steal More Bases Next Season

The Baltimore Orioles have a young star that could be a real threat on the base paths next season.

Gunnar Henderson had a tremendous first full season with the Baltimore Orioles as he was named the American League Rookie of the Year.

But, there is always room for improvement, even in areas where Henderson has already shown himself to be adept.

Henderson showed he had some speed on the bases last season, and MLB.com believe it is time for Henderson to show it more, to the point where he could hit a significant benchmark statistically.

MLB.com recently produced a piece about “10 players who should run more in 2024,” and Henderson made that list at No. 3.

Henderson slashed .255/.325/.489/.814 with 28 home runs and 82 RBI as he split time at shortstop and third base. Once Jackson Holliday makes it to the Majors, the belief is that Henderson will be the full-time third baseman.

A third baseman with speed would be a different twist on the position. Henderson stole 10 bases last season and was caught three times. But it’s that rate of return that MLB.com believes has promise in 2024.

His average sprint speed last season was 28.8 feet per second, which was over last year’s MLB average of 27.0. He also had nine bolts last season. That’s what MLB classifies as sprints of 30 feet per second or better, which is considered elite.

He’s also a smart baserunner. In the minors he stole bases at an 85 percent success rate and swiped 40 bases in three seasons.

If Henderson can improve his steal rate, MLB.com believes he could easily be a 20/20 player, or even a 30/30 player after winning a Silver Slugger last season.
