Young Orioles Stars Named To All-Star Rookie Team

The honors continue for young Baltimore Orioles stars Gunnar Henderson and Yennier Cano.

Two Baltimore Orioles were named to the Baseball Digest/eBay 2023 All-Star Rookie Team, revealed by the MLB Network on Tuesday.

Those stars were third baseman Gunnar Henderson and relief pitcher Yennier Cano.

Henderson had a brilliant season in his rookie year with the Orioles after making a brief appearance with the team late in the 2022 season.

He made the Orioles’ Opening-Day roster and played in 150 games. He was a key piece in Baltimore’s incredible 2023 in which the team won 101 games and the American League East. The Orioles were the No. 1 seed in the AL playoffs but fell to the eventual World Series champion Texas Rangers.

He slashed .255/.325/.489/.814 with 29 doubles, nine triples, 28 home runs and 82 RBI. He was named the AL Rookie of the Year and won the Silver Slugger award at third base.

The former second-round pick out of Selma, Ala., in 2019 was named the Baseball America Minor League Player of the Year for 2022 after he batted .297 with 19 home runs, 76 RBI, and 22 stolen bases in 112 games.

Cano signed with the Minnesota Twins out of Cuba in 2019 and joined the Orioles late in 2022 when he was part of the Jorge López trade.

He made three appearances with the Orioles in 2022, but he came into his own last season once he was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on April 14. He retired the first 24 hitters he faced and made the All-Star Team for the AL.

Cano had a 2.11 ERA in 72 appearances with a 1-4 record and eight saves. He struck out 65 and walked 13.

The rest of the team included Houston catcher Yainer Diaz, Cincinnati shortstop Matt McLain, Minnesota second baseman Edouard Julien, Boston first baseman Tristan Casas, Arizona outfielder Corbin Carroll, Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder James Outman, Colorado Rockies outfielder Nolan Jones, Cincinnati utility player Spencer Steer and New York Mets starting pitcher Kodai Senga.
