Former Orioles Lefty Agrees To Deal with Milwaukee Brewers

Wade Miley has resurrected his career since leaving the Baltimore Orioles and the Milwaukee Brewers want him back for another season.

A former Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher is set to return to his 2023 team after he agreed to a free-agent deal with the Milwaukee Brewers according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Miley hasn’t pitched for the Orioles since 2017, but he’s continued to contribute to several teams since his departure from the Orioles.

Miley is coming off a 2023 with Milwaukee in which he helped them to the NL Central crown before losing in the NL Wild Card Playoffs. He went 9-4 with a 3.14 ERA on a one-year, $4.5 million deal with a $10MM mutual option for 2024.

Miley turned down the option and got a $1 million buyout to re-test the market.

Miley spent part of 2016 and all of 2017 with the Orioles. In 2016 he made just 11 starts for the Orioles, as he went 2-5 with a 6.17 ERA.

He returned in 2017 half a point off the ERA, but still struggled to an 8-15 record with a 5.61 ERA.

After Baltimore, he joined Milwaukee for the first time in 2018, followed by spending 2019 with Houston, the 2020 and 2021 seasons with Cincinnati and 2022 with the Chicago Cubs.

Away from Camden Yards, he resurrected his stock with a 14-6 record with Houston and a 12-7 record in 2021 with Cincinnati. In both of those seasons he had an ERA of below 4.00.

Miley can back-stop a rotation that includes Corbin Burnes, Freddy Peralta, Adrian Houser and Colin Rea, even though the Brewers are rumored to be shopping Burnes, who is in his final arbitration season and is due a salary the Brewers may not be willing to pay.

The Orioles have been linked to Burnes in potential trade scenarios.

Miley, a former first-round pick of Arizona in 2008, broke in with the Diamondbacks in 2011. He made his only All-Star Game appearance in 2009, a year in which he went 16-11 with a 3.33 ERA for the Diamondbacks, which stands as one of his best seasons. He finished second in NL Rookie of the Year voting after that season.

Miley has also played for Boston and Seattle and is 108-98 for his 13-year career. He has a 4.06 ERA in 315 games (308 starts), with 1,359 yards and 601 walks.
