Orioles Reveal Plan For Former All-Star Starting Pitcher

The Baltimore Orioles have a plan for their new signing, Julio Teheran, who is in camp on a minor-league deal.

The Baltimore Orioles have a plan for pitcher Julio Teheran, who recently joined the team on a minor-league deal that could land him a raise if he’s able to make 26-man roster.

Teheran’s deal allows him to make $2 million if he’s able to make the Orioles’ Major League roster at any point in 2024.

But as for now, Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told MLB.com that the team is going to build Teheran up as a starter, citing the team’s depth issues in the rotation.

The Orioles are dealing with two significant injuries in their rotation during spring training. Kyle Bradish, who finished in the Top 5 of Cy Young voting last year, is dealing with a UCL sprain in his throwing arm. He’s received a PRP injection and is in a throwing program but is expected to start the season on the injured list.

The Orioles also know that John Means started spring training about a month behind and may not be ready to start on Opening Day.

Teheran enjoyed his greatest success with the Atlanta Braves, where he pitched from 2011-19. He had five different seasons in which he won at least 10 games, including back-to-back 14-win seasons in 2013 and 2014. He made the National League All-Star game in 2014 and 2016

He’s bounced around since then, spending 2020 with the Los Angeles Angels, 2021 with the Detroit Tigers and 2023 with the Milwaukee Brewers. In 2022 he played in independent baseball and in the Mexican League.

For his career, Teheran is 81-82 with a 3.83 ERA in 254 games
