Another Suitor Has Emerged for Padres Free Agent Blake Snell

Could Snellzilla be the second Kaiju reference for this city?

The reigning NL Cy Young winner still has not signed with a team. After one of his best years in Major League Baseball, the former Padres pitcher remains on the market.

At his asking price, a reunion between the Padres and Blake Snell does not seem likely. The New York Yankees, however, with deep pockets and pitching needs, could land the 31-year-old lefty.

After missing out on Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Yankees have turned their attention to the other top starters on the free-agent market. According to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand, the Yanks are among the teams that have been connected to all three of Jordan Montgomery, Blake Snell and Shōta Imanaga.

The Yankees were one of the finalists for Yoshinobu Yamamoto, but he ultimately signed the largest contract ever given to a pitcher with the Dodgers, leaving the Yankees empty-handed and still needing a pitcher.

The Yanks have their ace in this year's AL Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole. Still, though, they need someone else to help their rotation in an ultra-competitive AL East.

They may not need an ace, though. Last year, Brian Cashman signed LHP Carlos Rodon to a six-year $162 million contract. So far, that contract has not panned out for the team, but they could go into 2024 relying on him to be the No. 2.

Still, a rotation of Cole, Snell, and Rodon would be one of the best in baseball, especially in October. Whether or not that happens relies entirely on whether Hal Steinbrenner loosens the purse strings a bit.
