Former Padres Outfielder Joins NL Contender on Minor League Deal

The veteran outfielder is heading to the NL East.

A one-time San Diego Padre has found a new home.

Veteran outfielder Ben Gamel has signed a minor league deal with the New York Mets. The Mets announced via social media.

Gamel's contract is a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. His career with the Padres started when he was traded to San Diego in July 2023.

Gamel spent only six games as a Friar in 2023. The 31-year-old outfielder slashed .200/.200/.267 with a .467 OPS. He collected zero home runs, two RBIs, three hits, two runs and two strikeouts in 15 ABs.

The outfielder was later designated for assignment in early September; he cleared waived and was outright to El Paso a couple of days later. However, Gamel rejected the assignment and elected free agency instead.

His career in San Diego was short-lived, but we wish him the best in spring training with the Mets.
