Padres Add Reliever Off Waivers From AL East Squad as Free Agency Gets Underway

The Padres made the move on Wednesday.

The San Diego Padres added some depth to their bullpen Wednesday by claiming pitcher Logan Gillaspie off waivers.

Gillaspie, a 26-year-old righty, was claimed off waivers by the Boston Red Sox in early September after the Baltimore Orioles dropped him.

The Red Sox optioned Gillaspie to Triple-A, where he would finish the season. Gillaspie appeared in 11 games for the Orioles this past season, holding a 6.00 ERA across nine innings. The year prior, Gillaspie held a 3.12 ERA across 17.1 innings as a rookie.

Baltimore signed Gillaspie as a minor league free agent ahead of the 2021 season. He still has a minor league option remaining, giving the Padres flexibility with their roster decisions.

With several open spots on their 40-man roster, a corresponding move was not necessary.

This is just the first of many moves for the Padres as free agency gets underway. You can never have too much pitching depth, and the Padres are getting that going early in the free agency period.
