Padres Highlights: Avila Struggles As San Diego Falls to Diamondbacks

If a winning streak falls in the desert, does it make a sound?

The San Diego Padres have broken their three-game winning streak, losing 5-3 to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday.

The Padres fell in a hole early, as Pedro Avila continued to struggle while getting the start. Avila pitched 3.1 innings and gave up five hits, four earned runs and a home run while registering just one strikeout against the Diamondbacks. His ERA has now risen to 9.82 through the Cactus League season.

The Diamondbacks capitalized, taking a 5-0 lead after the third inning. Eugenio Suarez hit the Diamondbacks' home run and three RBIs. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. recorded the Diamondbacks' other RBI.

The Padres would stage a comeback effort beginning in the fourth inning. San Diego scored two runs in the fourth inning, followed by a third in the sixth inning to cap the scoring.

Tyler Wade led the charge for the Padres with two RBIs. Brett Sullivan also recorded an RBI.

The Padres were no match for a Diamondbacks lineup boasting most of its top hitters. Manny Machado, Ha-seong Kim, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jake Cronenworth were among the San Diego regulars who did not make the trek across town from Peoria to Scottsdale's Salt River Fields.

Tim Locastro went 0 for 3, lowering his spring batting average to .556 and cooling his hot start.

Now the Padres will return home to take on the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday. The Padres will then have a day off from play on Thursday.
