San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado had a big night on Saturday, hitting a go-ahead two run single in the 8th inning as the Friars came roaring back to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-3.

The dramatic comeback cut the Padres' deficit in the wild card standings to just three games, and Machado's to thank for a significant part of that.

But it hasn't been all perfect for the heart and soul of this Padres team, as Machado's been dealing with hamstring tightness, per Friars manager Bob Melvin.

The team's second-year skipper provided an update on Machado after the Padres' win, and while nothing seems too serious, it's still something to keep an eye on.

Machado is in the Padres lineup for their series finale against Los Angeles tonight, but hamstring tightness isn't something to take lightly, especially given the impact the third baseman can and did have in Saturday's victory.

Machado went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in the Friars' win, just the latest in what's been a good run of late.

He's hitting .284/.378/.612 with 12 HR's and 32 RBI over his last 30 games for a Padres team who's gone through a rollercoaster last few weeks.

The Padres went from potential sellers at the trade deadline to keeping their roster intact just a few days later -- a decision that pitcher Joe Musgrove pleaded for the front office to make.

Now they sit with realistic playoff hopes -- something that didn't look to be a possibility in parts of July.

And Machado should be contributing for the Padres in their most crucial stretch of the season. For them to fully turn their disappointing season around, he'll need to remain healthy and keep making an impact for a San Diego team that's now settled after being in flux for quite a while.
