The Padres got some devastating news on Friday afternoon as the results of rotation ace Joe Musgrove's MRI came in. The imaging revealed shoulder inflammation that will lead to him being shut down for at least three weeks.

At worst, the Padres could be without Musgrove for the rest of the season. Dennis Lin of The Athletic was among those to report the update.

Lin added that there's hope for a return this season but the team said it would "act in Musgrove's best interests."

Right off the bat, again, it's a devastating blow to a Padres team that has been playing some of its most consistent baseball of the season recently. The club added veteran left-hander Rich Hill at the trade deadline for rotation depth, but he's hardly a direct replacement for Musgrove.

The club is also another week or two away at best from a Michael Wacha return.

Adding to the great timing of this news, the Padres are welcoming the Dodgers for a critical four game series at Petco starting tonight. While Musgrove wasn't expected to start in the series, it's a gut punch that doesn't help leading into the rivalry matchup.

Musgrove was scratched from his scheduled start earlier this week when the comfort arose in Colorado. He has a 10-3 record with a 3.05 ERA in 17 starts this season, the first year of a five year, $100 million deal.
