Padres News: Bob Melvin Feels Sunday May Have Been Toughest Loss of Season

Bob Melvin thinks the 5-4 loss to the Diamondbacks was the toughest loss of the year.

Sunday’s 5-to-4 loss against the Arizona Diamondbacks may be the roughest loss for the San Diego Padres. Their manager Bob Melvin talked about it to the media.

“We've had some tough losses this year,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said. “This is probably as tough a loss as we've had based on where we are, who we're playing and what every game means right now.”

So, what exactly continues going wrong for the team?

“If I had an answer for it, I’d tell you,” Melvin said. “We just have to be better about stepping on the gas pedal and continuing as the game goes along. You know, we’ve had some tough losses this year, but this is probably as tough a loss we’ve had — based on where we are, who we’re playing and what every game means right now.”

Now, with the National League Western Division title out of reach, both the Padres and the Diamondbacks are battling for one of the National League Wild Card spots.

Despite struggling after the All-Star break, the Diamondbacks are 2.5 games from making the playoffs as a Wild Card team whereas the Padres are 5.5 games out of the last Wild Card spot.

The Padres have been disappointing for the entire year. After their front office management spent wildly this past offseason, the Padres have incredible pressure to go to the postseason, and the team hasn’t won more than three in a row this season.

Losing to a team in front of the Padres in the Wild Card race is frustrating for Melvin.
