Padres News: Bob Melvin Provides an Update on Injured Outfielder

Adam Engel yet to have set timeline on return.

When Adam Engel joined the San Diego Padres this past offseason, he was looking to re-establish himself in the league following a down year with the White Sox. The veteran outfielder would come to find out that he was likely to be fighting for minutes to an even greater extent with Fernando Tatis Jr. changing positions .

Unfortunately, Engel's redemption arc will be on a pause due to him sustaining a right calf injury. Team manager Bob Melvin revealed they are taking the recovery process day by day and don't know too many details about when he will back.

"He's going to be a little bit," said Melvin. "I mean, it's a longer Spring. He won't be in the first week of games, I'm not sure when after that."

Engel is 31-years-old and looking to make the most of his opportunity with the Friars. He is currently on a one-year deal with the team looking to prove why he belongs. However, San Diego has made it clear they are looking to win big this season and Engel has to fight for a spot in a lineup full of talent.

Tatis is not eligible to return from suspension until April so Engel could take advantage of that once he heals from his calf strain and get as many minutes as possible in the outfield.
