Padres News: Dylan Cease's Status For Korea Games Revealed

More updates on the Padres' recent trade acquisition.

In a recent article in the San Diego Union-Tribune, Kevin Acee laid out the plans for the Padres' newest addition, Dylan Cease. He will not be on the active roster for the series against the Los Angeles Dodgers but will start an exhibition game.

Cease will not be on the active roster for the Dodgers series. The Padres plan to have him start one of the exhibitions against the Mariners, Monday or Tuesday at Petco Park.

When the Padres traded for the Chicago White Sox ace, the team was already getting ready to leave for South Korea. So, Cease was unable to catch the same flight as the rest of the team across the Pacific.

He joined the team on a separate flight the next day.

The news that he will not pitch against the Dodgers is not all that surprising. Earlier in the week, the team announced that Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove would make starts in the two-game series.

The team has not yet announced who will start on opening day against the San Francisco Giants on March 28, though they have hinted at either Musgrove or Darvish. However, Cease should still make his official Padres debut sometime during that four-game series.

The Padres traded for Cease for a trio of top prospects and right-handed reliever Steven Wilson. Cease has two years left in arbitration before he hits free agency in 2026.

He's hoping to return to his 2022 form where he had a 2.20 ERA and finished second in the American League Cy Young award voting.
