Padres News: 'Feels Like a Miracle' to Bob Melvin That Friars Are Still in Playoff Contention
As the San Diego Padres entered a crucial four-game series against their in-division rival, the San Francisco Giants, manager Bob Melvin was feeling reflective. He saw this as another opportunity for this club to make a move to try and right the ship.
After all, the Padres have been struggling to climb back into contention all season long, and the Giants sit ahead of them in the standings. This could be a chance for them to make up some ground in their push toward the finish line.
With all the struggles that San Diego has seen this season, Melvin is just thankful that his team is still in contention for the postseason, even if the likelihood is low.
“I mean, this is a team that if we ever were gonna have a chance here in front of us, a four-game series against these guys, it’s a real opportunity among a lot of opportunities we’ve had here recently,” Melvin said. “The fact that you looked up today and what were we seven games back or something like that, it kind of feels like a miracle at this point that we keep somehow being in it. So yes, it was very disappointing how we started the game today and really how the game went in general.”
San Francisco took the first game of the series, but the Padres fought back and took game two on Friday night. They have another chance to send a message in game three as well.
The Friars don't have to just catch the Giants in the standings, but gaining some ground on them would really help things. Failure to do so would be a major hit to their already bleak chances.
With only a month left in the season, if the Padres want anything to happen, the time is now. It has to be, otherwise, this team will go down as one of the biggest letdowns in the history of baseball.
