The Padres firmly announced themselves as buyers at the trade deadline as the club has added a number of players including first baseman Garrett Cooper and RHP Sean Reynolds from the Marlins for LHP Ryan Weathers.

Bob Nightengale was among those to report the deal on Twitter.

The Weathers trade is somewhat shocking as he was someone on the short list to potentially start for San Diego tonight.

With Cooper, it's another somewhat surprising addition considering the team also added Ji-Man Choi who is another player with limited defensive profile on the field. Over the course of his career, his played mostly first base (234) and a few games in the outfield (81).

He's hitting .256 with 13 home runs and 46 RBI over 82 games this season.

Reynolds is a right-handed pitching prospect that reached Double-AAA this season. He was originally drafted as a position player and transitioned to the mound in 2021. He has a 3-1 record with a 2.77 ERA over 38 games this season.
