Padres News: Friars Could Be On the Wrong Side of History This Season
It's been anything but a great season for the San Diego Padres.
The Friars came into 2023 with a star-studded roster and they were looking to build off the momentum of the previous season where they advanced to the NLCS.
Unfortunately for San Diego, it hasn't gone according to plan.
After another loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday, the Friars both lost the series and dropped to four games out of the National League's last wild card spot.
When looking at the totality of the Padres season to date, it certainly seems like the team's had more than their share of problems in close games.
And when looking at the numbers, that assumption would both be correct, and San Diego could turn out to be historically bad in that area.
"The Padres are 0-10 in extra-inning games this season, and could become only the third team in MLB history to be winless in a full season. They have never gone an entire season having won fewer than four extra-inning games.
"They also are a major-league worst 6-18 in one-run games."
That's a total of 34 winnable games that San Diego could close the deal on.
While one can't assume that the team could win all of those, if they went 24-10 in those contests for instance, they would be atop the NL West and certainly in a much better position than they are now -- currently scratching and clawing to stay afloat in the playoff race.
If there's one set of numbers that encapsulates the 2023 San Diego Padres, it's that.
Granted, the fact that they haven't been blown out in many games may also give them a beacon of hope that they could be able to go on an excellent run to turn around their season, but their realistic chances of that are fading fast.
