Manny Machado was a key cog in Saturday night's come from behind win over the Dodgers. The fact that he was still in the game when it happened was a minor miracle.

Two innings earlier, he got into an animated argument with home plate umpire John Bacon where he tossed his bat and helmet while making fairly grand gestures with his arms while explaining what he felt was a missed pitch clock related violation from Dodgers reliever Brusdar Graterol.

Usually all that would add up to being ejected. Maybe Manny had a good enough argument where Bacon let it slide. Machado talked about the incident after the game.

“I’m not gonna get tossed,” Machado said. “I’m just trying to give him information. I’m smarter than that. It’s a big game. … I’m just trying to lay down the facts. He said, ‘You need to be ready.’ That’s why I kind of got hot in that situation. I was like ‘No, no. Hold on one second. I’ve got to eight seconds to be ready.’ And I know this rule, because I already got called out on it. So I got eight seconds to be ready. So it’s not on me. He needs to wait for me until eight seconds. After eight seconds it’s a different story. So I think that’s where it kind of got a little spicy there. But we all know better than that. It’s a key game. They want me to stay in the game. I’m trying to stay in the game as well. So just trying to treat them with respect. Just conversation that we’re having."

Luckily for the Padres, he did stay in the game and delivered a clutch two run single to put the Friars ahead and knock the Dodgers off their game.
