As the San Diego Padres year has gone on, the team has started to see more and more injuries pile up. It’s normal over the course of a long season, but for a team that needs all the help that they can get, it’s a bit concerning.

They find themselves still trying to figure out how to get back into contention. It has caused much frustration all year long, and with only a month left in the season, the clock is ticking.

One player that has been dealing with injuries is star third baseman Manny Machado. He has been playing through some elbow discomfort, and it has affected things on the field.

The injury has gotten worse as the year has gone on, and the idea of possibly shutting him down is starting to become a reality.

“It seems increasingly possible that once the Padres are officially eliminated from the playoff picture — if not before then — Manny Machado’s season could end.”

Per Kevin Acee of The SD Union-Tribune

When asked about this possibility, Machado seemed unsure about the whole thing.

“I don’t know,” Machado said when asked if he might be shut down. “We’ll see. It’s about going out there and playing, so …”

Per The SD Union-Tribune

After all, he is a big competitor and wants to do whatever he can to help his team win games. But considering where the Padres are in the standings, it could make sense for the long-term to take him out for the rest of the season.

On the season, he is hitting only .247 with 25 home runs and 78 runs batted in. The injury has affected things at the plate for Machado this year.

If he is to shut down, it likely won't happen until the Padres are officially eliminated. This team isn't going to quit, and Machado is one of the leaders in that team mindset.
