Padres News: Team Officially Announces Manny Machado 11-Year Contract
The Padres signed Manny Machado to a 10-year, $300 million contract before the 2019 season, with an opt-out after the fifth year. Four years in, Machado has been everything San Diego could have hoped for an more, so when he announced recently that he intended to opt out after the 2023 season, owner Peter Seidler made it a priority to keep that from happening.
Sunday morning, it was announced that Machado and the Padres had agreed on a huge contract extension, and that news became official on Tuesday.
PEORIA, AZ — The San Diego Padres have signed third baseman Manny Machado to a new 11-year contract through the 2033 season, President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller announced today.
San Diego didn't announce the contract terms, but Jeff Passan of ESPN reported on Sunday that it's $350 million over the 11 years and begins immediately. So the new contract supersedes the last six years of Machado's original deal and adds an extra five more on top.
In four seasons as the Padres third baseman, Machado has posted a 136 OPS+ and 17.6 WAR, and in 2023 he posted 6.8 WAR and finished second in the National League Most Valuable Player voting. He was recently named by MLB Network the fifth-best player in baseball on their Top 100 Right Now list.
Machado will turn 30 in July, which means he'll turn 40 in July of the final season of his contract. He is a six-time All-Star and has finished in the top five in MVP voting four times. He's also the clubhouse leader on an ascendant San Diego team that reached the NLCS last year for the first time since 1998.
