The San Diego Padres have been fairly quiet in free agency, other than a few back-of-the-bullpen signings. Their biggest move of the offseason was trading superstar outfielder Juan Soto, but on the free agent front, they've mainly stayed in the background, waiting to see if any major opportunities present themselves.

The team has been trying to cut salary all offseason, a big reason why they shipped Soto. However, the team could have a free agent signing on the horizon.

The New York Post's Jon Heyman is reporting that the Padres are looking into bringing back veteran catcher Gary Sanchez

"The Padres have considered bringing back Gary Sanchez, who did a terrific job both ways for them, but there’s a gap in talks."

Per Jon Heyman of The New York Post

Sanchez joined the team after a short stint with the New York Mets last year, and it seemed to revitalize his career. With San Diego, Sanchez hit 19 home runs and 46 RBIs in 72 games.

The 31-year-old would likely split time with catcher Luis Campusano, but the team also traded for Kyle Higashioka in the Soto trade. Thus, they may not have a need for Sanchez.

It's not necessary for the Padres to carry three catchers on the roster, so a reunion may be on hold. However, they could also utilize him as a designated hitter to get his bat back into the lineup.

The Padres want to have a more well-rounded team this coming season, and Sanchez could help provide that. It remains to be seen if the two sides can come to an agreement, but the interest is reportedly there.
