A little over a week after A.J. Preller said the club would retain Bob Melvin as their manager, the Padres shocked everyone by letting him take the open manager job with the San Francisco Giants. Since then the organization has been trying to find someone to replace Melvin for next year.

In the early goings, Ryan Flaherty and Mike Shildt, both already in the organization, headlined the search as top candidates. Recently, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune tweeted the Padres looked to interview Carlos Mendoza, a bench coach for the Yankees.

Carlos Mendoza joins Benji Gil as the first official external options the Friars have looked at so far.

Mendoza has been in the Yankees system since 2009. He came up playing minor league ball for 13 years before joining the Staten Island Yankees coaching staff. From there he worked his way up the ranks becoming the Yankees bench coach in 2020.

Carlos Mendoza recently interviewed with the New York Mets to succeed Buck Showalter in their managerial search. Mendoza is considered a very serious candidate in Queens.

UPDATE

Mendoza has reportedly been hired but the Mets.
