Padres Rumors: Friars Linked to Former Dodgers Slugger

Southbound and Down

The lack of production from the designated hitter last year proved to be a massive problem for the Padres. This year the club needs to find a way to shore up that position with quality talent to lengthen the lineup.

One of the best designated hitters last year is set to hit the free agency market, and Jim Bowden could see him playing for San Diego.

J.D. Martinez found new life with the Dodgers as he thrived hitting in a lineup behind Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Will Smith. The 36-year-old was one of the best designated hitters in the league, belting 33 home runs, driving in 103 runs and posting a 134 OPS+. He has been to three consecutive All-Star games and continues to be a leader and mentor in the clubhouse. Martinez fit in well in the Dodgers’ clubhouse and if they don’t sign Ohtani, he would be welcomed back.

As much as it might be painful to read, J.D. Martinez makes a ton of sense for the Friars next year.

His production at the plate speaks for itself. Despite the abysmal performance by the Dodgers in the post-season, Martinez actually raised his playoff OPS to .974.

He's a "been there done that," type of player who leads by example in the clubhouse. Martinez spends all his time in the cage working on mechanics and consistency when he's not playing.

Lastly, he should not command too much money. If anything the number of years on his contract may determine where he lands in 2024. If A.J. Preller and the front office want to shed some payroll, they could lure Martinez to San Diego with a multi-year deal with friendly AAV.
