Former Texas Rangers Catcher Signs Deal With Royals

Former Texas Rangers catcher Sandy León signed a minor league deal with the Kansas City Royals and will be in big league camp in Surprise, Ariz.

A former Texas Rangers catcher has signed a minor-league deal with the Kansas City Royals, the team announced on Wednesday.

Sandy León will join the Royals at Major League spring training next month in Surprise, Ariz., which means he won’t be far from his former Rangers teammates as they share the same facility.

The 12-year MLB veteran batted .146 with four RBI in 21 games with the Rangers in 2023.

León was in spring training with the Rangers last season and was released by the team after camp broke. The Rangers re-signed him and then assigned him to Triple-A Round Rock. He was called him up on April 10 and designated for assignment on June 14.

He became a free agent and signed with the Cleveland Guardians but never earned a call-up from the minors.

He isn’t the only former Rangers player with the Royals. Relievers Will Smith and Chris Stratton both signed with Kansas City earlier this offseason. Former pitcher Cole Ragans was dealt to the Royals last summer and was the AL Pitcher of the Month for August.

León broke in with the Washington Nationals in 2012, five years after the Nationals signed him as an international prospect out of Venezuela.

After three seasons with the Nats he spent six seasons with the Boston Red Sox and was part of their 2018 World Series championship team.

He also played with Cleveland, Miami and Minnesota. He is a lifetime .208 hitter with 31 home runs and 149 RBI.
