Monty Takes Manhattan? Free Agent Jordan Montgomery, New York Yankees Talking Again

The Texas Rangers have shied away from spending big on free-agent pitching this offseason, including one of their postseason heroes, Jordan Montgomery.

The Texas Rangers may not be interested in their former left-hander Jordan Montgomery, but another of his former teams is returning to the fray.

The New York Yankees and Montgomery’s agent, Scott Boras, are back in contact as the Yankees try to sort through the first part of their season without their Cy Young winner, Gerrit Cole, the New York Post reported.

Cole is expected to miss several weeks with an elbow issue the team hopes won’t require surgery.

Montgomery broke into the Majors with the Yankees and started for them for two seasons before he was dealt to St. Louis at the 2022 trade deadline, where he helped the Cardinals reach the postseason.

He was traded in July to the Rangers from the Cardinals, along with Chris Stratton, for three players — pitcher Tekoah Roby, pitcher John King and infielder Thomas Saggese.

Montgomery had a career-best season in 2023, going 10-11 with a 3.20 ERA, 166 strikeouts, and 48 walks. He was 4-2 with a 2.79 ERA with the Rangers.

He shined in the postseason, going 3-1 with a 2.90 ERA. He earned wins in two of his five postseason starts and won Game 7 of the ALCS against the Houston Astros out of the bullpen.

The Rangers have avoided big-money free agents this offseason after freely spending the previous two years on shortstop Corey Seager, second baseman Marcus Semien, and pitcher Jacob deGrom.
