Nathan Eovaldi Named Texas Rangers May Player of Month

Nathan Eovaldi had one of the best months of a starting pitcher in Texas Rangers history during the month of May.

Pitcher Nathan Eovaldi is the Texas Rangers Player of the Month for May. Voting was completed by media members and broadcasters who cover the club on a regular basis.

Eovaldi went 4-0 record with a 0.96 ERA (4 ER/37.2 IP) in five starts for Texas, allowing one-or-zero runs in four of his five starts. His 0.96 ERA was the best in MLB among pitchers with 25.0-or-more innings, and it was just the seventh time in Rangers history that a pitcher has recorded an ERA below 1.00 in a full month (minimum 30.0 innings). His four wins were tied for the Major League lead.

Eovaldi produced just the second month in Texas history for a pitcher to have a sub-1.00 ERA with a WHIP of 0.85-or-lower (min. 30.0 IP), joining Charlie Hough in September 1983.

He ranked among AL leaders for the month in opponent OPS (2nd, .495), opponent slugging percentage (2nd, .264), innings (3rd, 37.2), WHIP (4th, 0.85), opponent batting average (5th, .178), opponent on-base percentage (6th, .232) and home runs allowed per 9 innings (6th, 0.48).

He was one of five American League pitchers with a complete game in May. He was the only one who had two complete games.

Eovaldi is just the second pitcher to win the Rangers’ monthly honor since the start of 2022, joining Martín Pérez, who won the award last May.

Eovaldi joins outfielder Adolis García as team monthly honorees in 2023, as García was selected for the award in March/April.

For the season, Eovaldi is 7-2 with a 2.42 ERA, ranking among American League leaders in complete games (1st, 2), wins (T2nd, 7), home runs allowed per 9 innings (2nd, 0.36), innings (4th, 74.1), ERA (6th), walks allowed per 9 innings (6th, 1.70), WHIP (9th, 0.996), and strikeout-to-walk ratio (10th, 5.00).
