ARLINGTON, Texas — Texas Rangers outfielder Adolis García was selected to join the American League All-Star Team as a reserve, the league announced on Sunday.

García joins five teammates, including four Rangers starters that were announced on Thursday — second baseman Marcus Semien, shortstop Corey Seager, third baseman Josh Jung and catcher Jonah Heim. Pitcher Nathan Eovaldi was also named to the team on Sunday.

The Rangers’ six All-Stars are the second-most to the Atlanta Braves, who are sending eight players. This is the third time the Rangers have at least six All-Stars. They had eight in 2012 and six in 2010. Their five position player selections match 2012 for most in team history.

García was also part of phase two voting to select the starters for the game. But he was the only Rangers player that didn’t get the votes needed at his position.

He was fifth in outfield voting, as Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels, Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees and Randy Arozarena of the Tampa Bay Rays finished in the top three.

That left García at the mercy of voting by the league’s players and coaches to determine the reserves.

He entered Sunday’s game against the Houston Astros with a .262 batting average with 20 home runs and 66 RBI. He’s hit 20 or more home runs in each of his last three seasons and ranked among the AL leaders in RBI and home runs.

He’s the first Rangers hitter to have three straight seasons of 20 or more home runs since both Joey Gallo and Shin Soo-Choo did it from 2017-19.

He also ranks among the top five AL leaders in runs, extra-base hits and total bases. His strikeout rate is on pace to be the lowest of his career.

Earlier this season García was the AL Player of the Week (April 17-23). In one game during that week he went 5-for-5 with three home runs, two doubles, eight RBI, five runs and a hit by pitch. That made him the third player in baseball’s modern era (since 1901) to have at least 16 total bases, three home runs, eight RBI and five runs in one game.

He also leads baseball with 10 outfield assists this season, and his 36 outfield assists since the start of the 2021 season are the most in baseball.

The All-Star Game is scheduled for July 11 in Seattle. The Rangers wrap up the first half of the season at the Washington Nationals, so the Rangers selected as All-Stars will have to travel from D.C. to Seattle after that Sunday’s game.
