Texas Rangers' Seager World Series MVP, Enters Historic Company

Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager is the fourth player to win multiple World Series MVP awards.

PHOENIX — Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager was named the Most Valuable Player of the World Series, and there wasn’t any real doubt he would be the selection.

Seager led the Rangers to a five-game victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, as he batted 6-for-21 in the series. But just about all of his hits had meaning.

That included his game-tying home run in Game 1 at Globe Life Field, one that pushed that game to 11 innings and led to a 6-5 win after Adolis Garcia hit his walk-off home run.

Seager had two other home runs in the series. He also scored six runs and drove in six runs. In the finale, he went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.

Seager also made history. The 2020 World Series MVP became the second player to be named the MVP twice in history. He joined Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson and Reggie Jackson. Seager is the second position player to claim the award twice, and like Jackson he did it with two different teams.

Jackson won his with the 1973 Oakland Athletics and the 1977 New York Yankees.

“I don’t think you can ever expect that,” Seager said of the accomplishment “That’s a very, very special group.”

Seager is in his second year with the Rangers, having signed the biggest contract in Rangers history in 2021. This season he played at an MVP level, despite missing more than a month with injuries.

He batted .327 with 33 home runs and 96 RBI, with a .390 on-base percentage and a .623 slugging percentage.

Seager now has 19 postseason home runs, which is the second-most of any shortstop. Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees holds that record with 20 home runs.
