Texas Rangers Prospect Earns PCL Player of Week Honors

Texas Rangers prospect Davis Wendzel, playing for Triple-A Round Rock, showed off the power last week.

Davis Wendzel is the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week after his fantastic offensive showing for the Round Rock Express, the Texas Rangers’ Triple-A affiliate.

For the week of May 22-28, the infielder batted .526 (10-of-19) with four home runs, three doubles, eight RBI and five walks. He struck out just three times.

His big game was Thursday at Albuquerque with two home runs and five RBI.

The 26-year-old prospect is slashing .252/.375/.497/.872 with eight homers and 24 RBI.

Wendzel, the Rangers’ No. 41 overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, starred at Baylor and was one of the top players in the Big 12. He played just seven games in the Texas system in 2019 and saw him progress stalled after the 2020 season was wiped out by COVID-19.

He’s tracking to have his best minor league season in the Rangers organization. His best batting average was .238 in his first full season in 2021 with three different affiliates. He set a career high in home runs (17) and RBI (52) last season with two different affiliates. But he batted .201.

The Express were off on Monday and start a homestand with Sugar Land on Tuesday.
