Texas Rangers Profile Rising After Franchise First World Series Title, According To The Athletic Rankings

The Texas Rangers received a bump in their overall franchise rankings after their World Series victory.

The Texas Rangers won their first World Series in November, and that title keeps paying off.

In The Athletic’s 2024 franchise rankings, the Rangers moved into the top 10.

The franchise rankings are for the Wild Card era of baseball, which began in 1995 when MLB added Wild Card teams for the playoffs.

The Athletic used a scoring system derived from one used by Dallas-Fort Worth-based writer and radio host Bob Sturm to rank NFL franchises. It includes a point system, with teams topping out at nine points for winning a World Series.

Naturally, the Rangers received a bump. The Rangers ranked No. 9 in the latest rankings with 37 total points.

Points are tallied for the entirety of the era, including nine playoff berths for the Rangers, and are based on how deep a team advanced in each postseason. The Rangers won seven division titles in that span and had consecutive 90-loss seasons twice, which deducts a point.

The New York Yankees — who have won five World Series and been to the playoffs 24 times since the rankings started — were No. 1 with 110 points. Atlanta is second with 81 points.

Texas’ AL West rival, the Houston Astros, ranked sixth with 65 points. They are the only AL West team ranked ahead of the Rangers.

The Rangers should be poised to add to their score in 2024 with a position-player roster that is virtually intact from last year. The Rangers should get a full season out of rookie Evan Carter, who joined the Rangers for the final few weeks of the regular season. The Rangers’ No. 2 prospect, Wyatt Langford, leads the Rangers in RBI in spring training and is likely to be in on their Opening Day roster.
