Dodgers Sign Polarizing Ex-Red Sox Pitcher, Former All-Star To Minor League Deal

Los Angeles is taking a chance on the former Red Sox pitcher

The Los Angeles Dodgers continue to add more veteran depth.

Los Angeles certainly had the biggest offseason of any Major League Baseball club as the team signed two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani, young phenom Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and All-Star slugger Teoscar Hernández and also traded for starter Tyler Glasnow.

The Dodgers are widely considered the top team in baseball but that hasn't stopped them from continuing to add to the organization. Los Angeles made yet another move Friday as the club signed former Colorado Rockies, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, and Milwaukee Brewers hurler Drew Pomeranz to a minor league deal, according to Oklahoma City Baseball Club communications director Alex Freedman.

"Dodgers have signed Drew Pomeranz to a minor league deal and he's been assigned to OKC," Freedman said. "Nine-year MLB (veteran) who has been beleaguered by injuries the past two years. Was with Angels in Spring Training and recently released."

Pomeranz hasn't appeared in a big league game since 2021, but he's an interesting pickup for the Dodgers. He had a polarizing stint in Boston but converted to a bullpen role after leaving the team and turned things around.

The veteran hurler logged a 1.45 ERA and 29-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 20 appearances out of the bullpen in 2020 with the Padres. He followed it up with a 1.75 ERA and a 30-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 27 appearances in 2021.

He has dealt with a handful of injuries since 2021, but if he's healthy, he could be a bounce-back candidate. Los Angeles signed fellow former Red Sox hurler Ryan Brasier in 2023 and he completely turned things around afterward. Maybe Pomeranz could do the same.
