Red Sox's Chaim Bloom Pours Cold Water On Trading For Starting Pitching Help

In a dogfight for a Wild Card berth, Boston has just over a month to get help for a playoff push

The Boston Red Sox's rotation is in dire need of help -- unfortunately, it may not be coming this season.

In 2023 the Red Sox starting pitching has a combined ERA of 4.80, sitting at No. 23 in the majors. With the Aug. 1 trade deadline approaching, the logical move would be to acquire help, assuming they stay in the race and intend to buy.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom weighed in on the situation and gave a less-than-inspiring answer.

“You have to constantly be on the lookout to add and constantly pushing yourself to see if you can get more out of the guys that are in-house because if you can help somebody take that leap to where they really become a viable part of that mix, it just gives you that many more options moving forward,” Bloom told MassLive's Christopher Smith on Saturday.

Bloom always says that he's constantly looking for ways to improve the team but went out of his way to explain how hard it will be to find a deal in the starting pitching market.

"It’s a need that 30 clubs have," Bloom said. "So many clubs are in the hunt that it’s not something that is going to be easy to go out and get. There obviously will be guys available. But because it’s a need for everybody, they’re going to be hotly contested.”

Boston is currently two games behind a spot for a Wild Card spot and if they want to compete they'll likely need to add at least one more arm to the rotation. It's unclear if Bloom is alluding to dropping expectations of a trade at the deadline or attempting to downplay his game plan.
