Three-Time All-Star Surprisingly Available; Red Sox Could Be Perfect Landing Spot

Should the Red Sox consider adding a little more veteran depth?

The 2024 season officially is here.

After what felt like an extremely long and slow offseason, the Boston Red Sox are back in action. Boston is four games into the young season and has been impressive so far. The starting pitching has been better than advertised and the Red Sox's offense should pick up as well.

Although this is the case, it wouldn't hurt to add a little more veteran depth. Boston already has been bitten by the injury bug and star third baseman Rafael Devers missed two of the club's first four games due to shoulder soreness.

Devers is okay now, but if he were to miss extended time later in the season, the Red Sox could be in trouble. Boston has Bobby Dalbec and Pablo Reyes on the bench and either could fill in at third base, an addition could make sense.

Veteran third baseman Evan Longoria still is available in free agency and is looking for his next opportunity. He wouldn't cost much and could make some sense for Boston.

The three-time All-Star has plenty of American League East experience after spending the first 10 seasons of his career with the Tampa Bay Rays. Since leaving Tampa Bay, he has spent time with the San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Longoria spent the 2023 season with the Diamondbacks and appeared in 74 games and launched 11 home runs and drove in 28 runs. He's the exact type of player with upside Boston could sign to a cheap deal to provide more depth.

The 38-year-old could provide some help at third base as needed and be a veteran presence in the clubhouse. Why not give him a chance?
