White Sox's bid for a sweep falls short in 6-3 loss

Things got off to a fast start for the White Sox this afternoon. In the top of the first, Eloy Jiménez came up to bat with a runner on first and two outs.

Congratulations to Jiménez on those achievements. In this game, his home run gave the White Sox an early 2-0 lead.

Unfortunately, that lead was short-lived. In the bottom of the first, things got off to a shaky start for White Sox pitcher Reynaldo López. Jeimer Candelario answered with a two-out, two-run homer of his own to tie the game at two. The Tigers took the lead in the second, when 2008 White Sox first round pick Gordon Beckham smacked a solo home run, Beckham's sixth homer of the year.

Things got worse for the White Sox in the third, even though López retired the first two batters that inning. After a double and a walk, Christin Stewart hit an RBI single to extend the Tigers' lead to two. Fortunately, López stranded the bases loaded by striking out Grayson Greiner on a slider. However, the Tigers extended their lead in the fourth on their third home run of the day. The solo home run by Victor Reyes put the Tigers up by a score of 5-2. López finished the fourth inning, but he did not return for the fifth. His final line was the following: four innings, five runs (all earned), nine hits, one walk, and three strikeouts.

The White Sox got one of those runs back in the top of the fifth, when they put together a two-out rally of their own. With the bases empty and two outs, Yoán Moncada doubled, and Welington Castillo hit a timely single to trim the White Sox's deficit to two.

However, that was as close as the White Sox would get. In the bottom of the seventh, John Osich gave up a solo home run to Will Castro, as the Tigers' lead grew to 6-3. The White Sox failed to put up a rally in the latter innings, so they settled for two out of three in this series against Detroit.

The White Sox will travel back home for the final seven games of the season. That seven-game homestand will start on Tuesday at 7:10 CST against Cleveland. The game will be on ESPN (wow, the White Sox are never on there) and WGN, while WGN 720 will have your radio coverage.
