In a recent article, Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report said the LA Clippers hope to bring back Russell Westbrook on a one-year $3.8M deal, with the intention to give him a bigger contract next summer with Early Bird Rights. As Pincus noted, the Clippers have taken this approach in the past with Reggie Jackson and Nicolas Batum.

It is already public news that the Clippers hope to bring Westbrook back, as team president Lawrence Frank said the following during his end of the season press conference:

"We want to bring Russell back," Frank said. "I think Russell - I give him a ton of credit, and I think it's a great example of when you have a trust in your partnership. [Ty Lue], [Paul George], [Kawhi Leonard] advocated strongly for Russ... I know T-Lue loved coaching him. Our guys loved having him as a teammate. We'd love to bring Russ back. But he's a free agent, and that will be obviously a choice he's earned."

This report that the Clippers hope to re-sign Westbrook on a home-town discount with the intention to pay him next summer is new, but it's also not surprising, as it's LA's only real path to retaining Westbrook while also eventually paying him what he's worth.

While there have been a lot of reports linking the Clippers to Chris Paul and other potentially available point guards, all signs point towards re-signing Westbrook being their first choice in free agency.
