Kawhi Leonard Contract Extension Update Revealed

The Clippers are having contract extension conversations with Kawhi Leonard.

The LA Clippers have a very interesting decision to make next off-season -  the contract extensions of both Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. Although the contracts expire next season, the Clippers have already started conversations right now.

According to a report from Law Murray of The Athletic, the LA Clippers are having healthy conversations with Kawhi Leonard about his extension with the team. Here is the exact excerpt from Law's article.

"The dialogue is healthy, as Leonard is extension eligible now; George won’t be extension eligible until September. History says Leonard is likely reaching the open market. The San Antonio Spurs did not reach an extension with Leonard in 2014 despite Leonard being the reigning NBA Finals MVP. Leonard reached restricted free agency in 2015 and signed a five-year maximum contract from there that included a player option."

Given Kawhi Leonard's injury history, it's going to be very difficult for the Clippers to want to give him a max contract. At the same time, they can't let Leonard walk without anything in return, nor can they enter their new Intuit Dome arena without the superstar. Any team that has a healthy Kawhi Leonard in the NBA Playoffs has a good chance of winning an NBA Championship, but a healthy Kawhi Leonard hasn't really been in a full playoff run since 2020. At some point, the sample size just becomes too great to overlook.
