The Memphis Grizzlies will play the rest of the season without star point guard Ja Morant due to season-ending shoulder surgery. This has led some to believe the Grizzlies could be sellers at the trade deadline. In a recent article, Bleacher Report's Eric Pincus proposed a hypothetical trade between the Grizzlies, Los Angeles Lakers, and Brooklyn Nets:

Grizzlies get: Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, Jaxson Hayes, Harry Giles III, a 2029 first-rounder, and trade exceptions ($8.3 million, $2.4 million and $1.9 million)

Laker get: Marcus Smart, Luke Kennard, John Konchar, Xavier Tillman, Dorian Finney-Smith, and a trade exception ($10.5 million)

Nets get: D'Angelo Russell, Jalen Hood-Schifino, and trade exceptions ($14 million, $2 million)

This trade gets the Lakers some new rotation pieces that could fit better than their current collection of role players. For Brooklyn, they get back an old friend in D'Angelo Russell, while landing an intriguing rookie in Jalen Hood-Schifino. For Memphis, they get back a potentially solid 2029 pick, along with four players.

The logic presented by Pincus in his article is complex, but for Memphis, they are getting off Smart's deal, which will cost them over $40M the next two seasons. For the Lakers, they are shaking things up by bringing in some new role players that could fit better than the ones they have now. For Brooklyn, they bring back Russell to fill a position of need, while taking a chance on Hood-Schifino.
