Lakers Clinch 8th Seed, Draw New Orleans Pelicans Tuesday, With Winner to Face Denver

This is pretty much worst-case scenario for the Lakers.

On the backs of massive performances from the Lakers' core four, LA has clinched the 8th seed, defeating the Pelicans 124-108. This sets the stage for a rematch on Tuesday, for a chance to become the 7th seed.

For LA, this is a favorable matchup, evidenced by what we saw today, as well as during the In-Season Tournament. LA's size and length pose issues for the Pels, with Anthony Davis' rim protection being a huge issue for Zion Williamson, arguably the Pelicans' best player, who struggles to score outside of the paint.

LA's offensive dynamism was on full display today, with LeBron James putting up an unbelievable 28-point, 11-rebound, 17-assist performance, with Anthony Davis adding 30 points and 11 rebounds. D'Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves combined for an additional 39 points, all on good efficiency.

With the Nuggets clinching the no. 2 seed, the winner of the Lakers-Pelicans rematch will draw Denver, which poses major issues for both teams. LA has dropped eight straight and matches up poorly, while the Pelicans lack the size and playoff experience to make a true push at the defending champions.

The loser of Pelicans/Lakers will square off with the winner of Kings/Warriors for a chance to be the 8th seed and take on the no. 1-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder. For the Lakers, losing on Tuesday and taking their chances against the Kings/Warriors might be the best option, but they won't take their chances.
