Lakers vs. Jazz Prediction for Today, 2/14
While this will be the final game before the All-Star break for the Lakers, the Jazz welcome in the Golden State Warriors tomorrow night. In fact, they were just crushed by the Warriors two nights ago, giving up 129 points in the process.
That made it back-to-back games in which Utah allowed that many points, and with LA’s defense tired having just been on the court last night, that’s why we’re focused on a high-scoring game. After all, that’s been the biggest issue for Utah this year. Both teams rank in the bottom half of the NBA in terms of scoring defense, but it’s the Jazz much further down that list.
Another commonality is that these teams both rank inside the top 10 in terms of pace. They’re two of the fastest teams in the league, with LA leading in that regard. So, the Lakers can certainly grab a win tonight, but they’re 1-4 against the spread versus the Jazz recently and on a back-to-back.
So, rather than trusting them to break that trend, we’ll trust what we saw the last time these teams met - they went over the total by 20 points! Therefore, our best Lakers vs. Jazz prediction for tonight is over 240.5 points (-110 at FanDuel Sportsbook).
Lakers vs. Jazz Player Props & Free Picks Featuring D’Angelo Russell & Lauri Markkanen
Given that we’re expecting a high-scoring game and we already mentioned Utah’s poor defense, it should come as no surprise that our Lakers vs. Jazz player props are starting with a point scorer. However, it may come as a surprise that it isn’t LeBron James or Anthony Davis.
D’Angelo Russell has turned things around, which was certainly proven by LA not wanting to deal him at the trade deadline. Prior to last night’s game, he had back-to-back games putting up 28 and 30 points, so we aren’t worried about it being just a one-time thing. Of course, we still need to see it more often, but he also thrived against Utah this season.
In LA’s two games against them this year, Russell led the team in scoring with 59 points. That’s nearly 30 points per game, so we’re willing to take D’Angelo Russell over 20.5 points (-125 at FanDuel Sportsbook).
Our second Lakers vs. Jazz player props pick isn’t so much riding the hot hand as it is trusting a player to return to form. Utah’s Lauri Markkanen has proven himself as a great scorer in the NBA, and he’s evolved into more than that. He had two double-doubles in the first three games of this month.
As much as we’d love to grab some plus-money, taking on Anthony Davis in the rebound department is not the best matchup. Instead, we’re expecting him to put up more than the 19 and 22 points we’ve seen the past two games. He had 33 just prior to that and 28+ in those two double-double games, so he’s more than capable.
LA’s defense hasn’t been nearly as poor as Utah’s, but it’s still not incredible, and they’re the ones coming into town after having been on the court last night. That fatigue should help Utah’s leading scorer perform well, so we’re rolling with Lauri Markkanen over 23.5 points (-115 at FanDuel Sportsbook).
