Lakers News: How Kobe Bryant Inspired All-Star LA Trade Prospect

His impact went beyond just basketball

When looking at the younger generation of basketball players in the NBA right now, a large majority of them got the pleasure of watching Kobe Bryant dominate the league for 20 seasons. It is well-known that he modeled his game, mentality, and approach to the sport after the legend that is Michael Jordan and few have come as close to embodying his greatness the way Bryant was able to.

And looking the crop of players that really were able to study Bryant's own 'Mamba Mentality' and overall love of his craft, Kyrie Irving undoubtedly should be at the top of every list. He has always been a score-first player and when you look at how his fadeaway jumpers, handles, and footwork all have developed over the course of his career, he definitely took notes from the Black Mamba.

The two developed a super close bond as Kyrie went from a rookie of the year to an NBA champion in 2016. In fact, right after the Cleveland Cavaliers completed their historic 3-1 comeback over the Golden State Warriors, Irving Facetimed Bryant in their locker room to thank him for all he had taught him.

As many would expect, the two bonded over so many things outside of the sport of basketball and in a recent interview with Brandon 'Scoop B' Robinson, Irving detailed how Bryant was able to inspire him.

"He was very inspirational, very loving & compassionate," said Irving. "He always had an open heart for those that want to follow his knowledge and wisdom. He was always willing to pass on what he learned. I was just more than grateful that I could have him as a mentor for as many years as I did. Shoutout to Vanessa and all the girls, they're very strong so I have to be strong too."

These types of stories always surface years down the line but it's always beautiful hearing how Bryant was able to show one of the greatest athletes in the world how to not just become the greatest player possible, but also the greatest man.
