Pelicans' Jose Alvarado Shines As Brightest Star In Rising Stars Game

Alvarado was named MVP of the 2023 Rising Stars Game

New Orleans, La- New Orleans Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado led his team to victory in the 2023 Rising Stars challenge. This year's format was different than in previous years. Four teams would battle tournament style for the right to claim victory at the end.

Jose was a part of Team Pau, who defeated Team Dereon in the first round and then Team Joakim in the championship match. The first-round matchup featured another Pelicans player, Trey Murphy III, who will have a busy All-Star weekend. In addition to participating Friday night in the Rising Stars game, Murphy will be in Saturday night's Slam Dunk contest.

Alvarado got the best of his Pelicans teammate in the opening-round matchup. The team who reached 40 points first would move on to the championship round. Jose led his team with 13 points on 6/10 shooting from the field. Murphy III would score a team-high 9 points in a losing effort. Two of his buckets were high-flying dunks, which may be a preview of Saturday night.

Jose would leave little doubt about who would take the prestigious MVP trophy. In a race to 25 points to claim the title, Jose would hit the game-winning shot to send Team Pau home with a victory.

It certainly has been a journey for the undrafted guard from Georgia Tech. Alvarado spent the majority of the start of his rookie season riding the bench. He then was transferred to the team's G-League affiliate midway through the year before finally getting his opportunity to find his place on the Pelicans team. That is not lost on Alvarado who posted on his social media what a privilege it was to be a part of this All-Star weekend.

Dreams have started to become a reality for Alvarado. Add an MVP trophy to his growing list of accomplishments.
