Can’t fault the Golden State Warriors for at least trying to pry O.G. Anunoby loose.

It sounds like a deal was never particularly close, but the Warriors did reportedly call the Toronto Raptors about a trade package centered around Jordan Poole for Anunoby, according to The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami.

When Toronto said no, the Warriors eventually pivoted, eventually sending Poole to the Washington Wizards for Chris Paul in what was essentially a salary dump to get off the remaining three years of Poole’s four-year, $128 million contract.

The Warriors have been connected to Anunoby dating back to the trade deadline but Toronto’s asking price for the 25-year-old forward remains high. The Raptors are said to have turned down three first-round picks for Anunoby, according to Bruce Arthur of the Toronto Star.

Poole, 24, is coming off a disappointing playoffs in which he averaged 10.3 points per game on 34.1% shooting. His defense was a problem for the Warriors all season and the altercation he and Draymond Green had prior to the year proved to be too much for the team to overcome.

Interest around the league for Anunoby remains high, though Toronto has so far shown no indication it's looking to move on from the second-team All-Defensive forward. Anunoby led the NBA in steals with 1.9 per game while averaging 16.8 points with a 38.7% three-point stroke, making him among the league’s best 3-and-D wings.
