Jontay Porter Bet 'Millions' Prior to Raptors Career, per Report

Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter reportedly spent millions with sportsbooks prior to signing with the organization this past year

Jontay Porter appears to have been a chronic gambler.

The Toronto Raptors center is said to have wagered millions of dollars on over 1,000 bets through a VIP account with FanDuel between 2021 and 2023, according to a report from the Action Network.

None of the bets are said to have been placed on the NBA or college basketball during those years.

Porter’s account was closed before he inked a two-way contract with the Raptors earlier this year. He had previously played in the G League between 2021 and 2023 with the Memphis Hustle, Wisconsin Herd, and Motor City Cruise.

NBA and G League players are prohibited from gambling on professional basketball but are free to place wagers on other sports.

Porter is currently under investigation by the NBA following unusual betting activity on prop bets associated with the 24-year-old center, as ESPN first reported. Twice this past season, sportsbooks noticed a flurry of bets placed on Porter to underperform his expected statistical totals. In both instances, Porter exited the games with injuries that had previously not been reported on the injury list. Those who had bet on Porter to not reach the milestones won their bets.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver confirmed the league’s investigation into Porter who missed the final 11 games of the year for “personal reasons,” the team said.

“It's cardinal sin what he's accused of in the NBA and the ultimate extreme option I have is to ban him from the game,” Silver said after the NBA owners meetings in New York. “That's the level of authority I have here because there's nothing more serious around this league when it comes to gambling and betting on our games – and that is a direct player involvement. And so the investigation is ongoing, but the consequences could be very severe.”

Porter had been on a two-way contract and has no contract with the Raptors moving forward.
